Dance Classes for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

People social dancing in pairs at a crowded Latin dance party, on a wooden floor
Are you thinking about signing up for dance classes for the first time? Many people have a lot of worries before their first class, so let us ease your mind with a few answers to FAQ's
  • Q: I never danced before. Am I going to be able to keep up? A: Beginner classes are designed for people just like you - Beginners. Everything is explained step by step, then you will practice, and as you get more comfortable, additional steps will be given. In general, our curriculum is a path of progression. All Levels are defined and skills you learn prepare you for the next level. We also offer a practice hour (Practica) every Tuesday evening, it is open to ALL levels

  • Q: What should I wear? A: No special outfits are required or needed for group classes. You will be moving, but dance classes are not extremely strenuous, so wear something you feel comfortable moving in. The more important piece is your shoes: we ask that you wear smooth soled shoes (no gym shoes!) so you can turn easily on wooden floors. If you already own dance shoes, any type, bring them! If you don't, no worries! Just bring something comfortable that can slide.

  • Q: Do I need to bring a partner? A: No need to bring a partner! Social dance classes rotate partners, so we will suggest that you dance with everyone else who is in the class, whether you bring a partner or not. If, however, you really want to just stick to dancing with your partner, you can do that, while the others rotate.
